Dear Friends, It has been awhile since I have sent a newsletter for a website update. Several reasons....my mind has been elsewhere, Murphy and I went on vacation and also no one has written. Because you classmates have been so financially supportive of our website, I feel some guilt on not holding up my end of the bargain, so here goes!

MUSEUM of SE TEXAS
Classmate, Clifford Antone was inducted into the Museum Hall of Fame recently. There was a very large attendance. Part of a video was shown during the plaque presentation that showed clips of Clifford being interviewed and also about him growing up in Port Arthur. It may be purchased at the museum.

CRUSING THE PANAMA CANAL
Murphy and I just returned from taking a 16 day cruise through the Panama Canal. We left on January 30 from Hobby Airport to fly to Ft. Lauderdale to spend the night. On January 31 we embarqued on our journey. This was top of Murphy's bucket list. His dad joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 17 in 1937. He was able to see the Panama Canal and hoped to return there someday. Since that didn't happen, Murphy did it for him. It was a great, educational adventure. It is amazing that someone came up with the idea for the locks to work as they do. We went to talks on the cruise about the history. We purchased a couple of books on it. We watched films. All very amazing. Our ports of call on our voyage on the Coral Princess was in Cartagena, Columbia, a nine hour voyage through the Panama Canal and the 3 locks, Fuerte Amador, Panama, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico before landing in San Francisco. Since we had already toured the San Francisco area and Napa Valley on a previous vacation we continued our trek back to southeast Texas and home to Lumberton! We learned while meeting fellow passengers that January is definitely the time when all the snowbirds are heading south....really south. Like Central America south!!! Everyone we met was from Canada, the East coast or the UK. The temperature at all the stops were in the upper 80's and mid 90's with humidity. We were the only fools that left Texas to be in Texas weather, it seemed. That's a check off the bucket list. Maybe next vacation will be a place off MY bucket list! Fingers crossed.

NEWS FROM THE HOMEFRONT
While on the cruise, I celebrated my 39th survivor anniversary since my throat cancer in 1980, Groundhog's Day, Super Bowl, Lincoln's birthday, Valentine's day and my oldest granddaughter's 16th birthday!!!! What a fun month. It has been better than January when we had news of ten deaths.
My sister has recently been placed on hospice. She lives in Humble at the Estia Care Private Assisted Living. Murphy is recuperating now from his gallbladder surgery that was performed 6 days after we returned from the cruise. My 14 year old youngest granddaughter is having her Winter Show for her middle school drill team. She is a lieutenant and loves working with the team. She is trying out next week for the high school drill team. Please pray for her because she is being tested to see if her kidney issues have reoccured. She had kidney surgery when she was 4 years old the week of Hurrricane Ike. She has had to continue with blood pressure medicine since then. On a good note, my oldest granddaughter scored the only soccer goal in a 1-0 win against Bridge City HS last night. We told her that was in honor of her 16th birthday she celebrated a week ago.

My Daddy’s MRI showed significant REGRESSION!!! I had to squint to see any markings! This is sooo AMAZING and we owe it all to GOD and all of you that are prayer warriors for him!!! The plan is to continue with the chemo that he’s on and she called this a chronic condition now. Please please continue to pray for him and his COMPLETE HEALING!!! I am feeling so much better today. I will give you an update on what has been going on in my life health wise. For the last 2 months or so, my doctors have been trying to figure out why I am dizzy and falling a lot. Finally my cardiologist sent me to an electrical cardiologist to help find out what is going on. He found that I have electrical problems with my heart. That’s why I had to have a heart Cath yesterday to make sure that I had no blockage. Then on Feb. 1, I go to my doctor in Houston to check out my spasms in my throat. Probably need a laparoscopy. After that and I get the all clear, I will have another heart cath to fix my electrical problems. This is not critical ,and I am at peace with everything now. I was kind of freaking out for a while, but with prayer and talking more with the doctors, I am a peace. Thanks for all of your prayers and concerns. Extra prayers won’t hurt. When I finally get everything fixed by the end of February, I will update everyone and give y’all the good news. Thanks again for all of your support. Love you all.

THANK YOU ALL FOR PRAYERS!! Its been a long but Blessed day!! Sugar Baby is home and doing well. Surgeon Dr. Margaret Porembski said the nodule on his thumb was growing in and around the nerve, it took more digging and cutting but successful. The other finger did well. Thank y'all again & Thankful for God's love & care all the time God is Good!!!

Ray and I made a quick trip to Fondren Clinic yesterday. I finally have an answer about my hand after 25 months. First, some nerves respond well, but the ulnar nerve (my problem) is not one of them. The two specialists did everything they could, but it didn't work. On February 11, I will have surgery at Fondren where they will put screws in each middle knuckle....the ring finger and the pinkie. Those fingers will not bend, but it may give me a slight amount of more function. It will be outpatient surgery which I'm glad for. I thank everyone who has praying for me.........each one was felt. At least I will know what can be done and what can't be done. That in itself is a relief.
Update:
Feb. 11
Well, the day of my final (I hope) hand surgery is here. It will be outpatient at Fondren in Houston. By this evening, I will have exhausted all efforts to gain mobility in my right hand. The Dr. will insert a screw in the knuckle of my right ring finger and right pinky. The fingers will no longer bend at the knuckles and they will not be straight, but we're hoping it will help with holding objects and general light usage. It's been a long 26 months, but I know I have the best doctor, Dr. Bennett. The ulnar nerve is the most difficult to work with. I'll appreciate your thinking of me today. Thank you!
OOPSIE
Feb. 13
Surgery is over, but won't see my hand until March 5 when they remove the bandage. I have pictures of the screws through the ring finger and pinkie knuckles. They will not move, but I hope to stop dropping things. Through YouTube, I have discovered Jeanne Robertson who is a comedian that looks only for the humor in everything. Yesterday, I would have given her an incident for her speaking engagements. I sit in the garage alot when the 4 walls get boring. It had been raining for two days; unbeknownce to me, Ray had put a bathroom rug at the back door to keep us from tracking gunk in the house. Bathtub rugs are quit puffy and with flip-flops on, down I went. I alternate the ice between my knee and my hand. Folks, I guess I need to install a camera! Thank you all for your prayers!

 (a note from Linda DeCuir McFadden) Feb. 20 Murphy had his gallbladder removed today. He found out his diagnosis about three weeks before the cruise was planned. Nah, we'll wait until the cruise is over!
