Butch and I are well. We did preschool online instruction for 32 straight days with our 4 year old grand girls, while the 6 year old grand boys had a neighborhood 1st grade pod situation. They all returned to school last week. The girls 4 days a week in-school, boys are in a hybrid model..2 days in, 2 days online. So, so, so glad they are back in school!!! I cannot say that loud enough! The Dallas grand girls have been back in school since August. Needless to say, we have been busy and thank God for the stamina He has provided for us all. Praying for each of us all and for our country!!!! God's blessings on us all!

COVID-19
Our only child, Stacy, was diagnosed with the corona virus Oct. 13 with symptoms starting on Oct. 11. She ran fever for 9 days, sore throat, continuous headaches, some cough, listlessness, but thankfully no lung or breathing distress or hospitalization. I posted on FB and she received so very many wonderful expressions of concern and prayers. I was overwhelmed with the response from my many wonderful classmates and so was she. Below is her message of THANKS:

I was soooo upset/scared upon receiving my positive Covid diagnosis. I was not in the right mindset to spend two weeks alone in quarantine. My friends and family quickly stepped up! Your thoughts, prayers, food deliveries, care packages, texts, reading material, calls, balloons, and drop offs of my favorite coffee creamer got me through it. They literally never ceased! Being my own nurse was definitely not easy, especially with 9 days of fever. However, you all helped me see the silver lining. When I grow up, I want to be just like my friends/family who have the biggest hearts! So today and every day, I’m THANKFUL for YOU.

FRIENDSHIP IS THE COMFORT OF KNOWING THAT EVEN WHEN YOU FEEL ALONE, YOU AREN’T.
Stacy McFadden Boullion

When reading comments, many classmates mentioned that someone in their family had also had been affected by this virus and in some cases, several family members at one time. Prayers that we won’t have to have any more of our classmates affected in the future.
At the same time that Stacy was at home with the Covid, her youngest daughter, Drew, was quarantined at her dad’s home due to be exposed at her high school in a small group setting. She turned 16 during this time and missed her birthday, her driving test, her drill team and homecoming. She took her classes by ZOOM. Murphy and I would go by her dad’s home bring her lunch each day and sit outside the picture window and visit. Then, we would go to Stacy’s home and drop her lunch off on her patio. Drew was asymptomatic and had negative testing but did lose her smell. Hmmmm Her big sister surprised her by getting some friends and family to do a DRIVE-BY on her birthday with decorated cars with streamers, balloons and signs. She cried the whole time as the cars went by.

NEWS FROM THE HOMEFRONT
It has been a crazy two months since the last update Sept. 21st. Murphy and I have both had cataract surgery and monovision implants. We are both definitely having to adjust to the newness of our eyes. Our brains are trying to work with two competing eyeballs. Not always fun but hopefully worth the wait. I’ll let you know in the next newsletter. We both have worn glasses for 30+ years. I didn’t know how many wrinkles I had under my eyes. Give me back my glasses!!!!
Stacy got a new golden retriever puppy that was born on Aug. 6th. Oh brother, we haven’t been around a new puppy in many years. I go check on her at lunch time every day and let her play in the yard with their 12 year-old golden. Fun times.
We had 5 rooms painted in October. That’s a lot of boxing up just to get ready. I see why people remodel or freshen up their homes when they are younger.
I miss getting out and visiting at lunch with classmates. I did have lunch with Sharon Lewis Forrest once and with Ernie Bullion and Sandra Garsea Broussard today. I’ll be glad when we are comfortable getting out more.
My brother, Danny Boy, had to have some surgery on his hand. He loves to fish in Bolivar and the Bay and a fish gill nicked his hand. It got infected. He ended up having to go to an infectious disease specialist and surgeon. He is now on the mend. We were thankful that it was not the flesh-eating bacteria. We saw what a horrible time classmate, Gene Ross, went through.
Well, it is that time again….Hallmark movies. Yep, while Murphy is at the “beer” lease they are being taped and viewed. But, they also have Christmas movies on UP, HMMD, and Lifetime channels. It’s heaven. Murphy hasn’t had any luck yet at his lease in Wiergate, but Danny Boy snagged an 8 pointer.
We are having a small Thanksgiving this year. We won’t to enjoy our health while we can.

Hopefully, I completed the last of my chemotherapy at MD Anderson Hospital. I'm returning to MD Anderson Hospital next week for tests and X-rays to see if my chemotherapy was successful. Please put me in your prayers. I had my right leg amputated after seven unsuccessful surgeries and the doctors weren’t able to save my leg. About three weeks ago I had a prosthetic leg made and it didn’t fit. So, tomorrow I’m going to a local doctor office and have another one made. Once I get it, I will start therapy to learn how to walk with it. Without our precious God I wouldn’t be here today. I give it to our Precious God that I will be okay and in remission. l would love to hear from you (409)549-1040

Charlotte Pace Thurston
After battling cancer and several surgeries for 6+ years, Charlotte is going to be placed on hospice. Please pray for this sweet, kind and gentle soul. She never complains and she sure has had reasons to. Charlotte and I met at Travis when she moved from DeQueen. We became best friends and hung out all the time through the rest of elementary and through junior high at Woodrow Wilson. She lived two blocks down on the same street, 8th in Lakeview. What fun we had growing up. High school separated us some because we had different interest. I was in the band and politics that took up lots of time. She and Gilsey Viator Campion are still are very close. Both Charlotte and I became teachers. I have never heard an unkind word about my sweet friend. Pray for her as I continue to do so, also.

George Collins
Please pray for our friend and classmate, George. He is at end stage Parkinson disease. He represented our school well by having the highest scholastic average in our senior year. He was in the band with me. I smile at the memories of his fun loving nature and great wit and laugh.

Ernie Bullion
She had extensive surgery in October for Trigeminal Neuralgia with the doctor having to go into the skull behind the ear. Some bone is removed and vascular compressions of the nerve are moved and a sponge-like pad is place between the compression and nerve. She had the same surgery on the opposite side of her head several years ago. Only 1% of patients have it occur on both sides.

Peggy Foster Hoyt
Oct. 11
She has been living with Liz Tieskens in for 7 months now trying to regain her health. She returned to Florida a week ago and will remain in quarantine at the assisted living facility there for 2 weeks. Lots of health issues (heart/kidney mainly) were addressed while in Colorado. She is recovering now with medicines adjusted accordingly. Prayers that she will have doctors there in Florida that can transition her care successfully.
(How great to have a classmate/best friend that could be of such wonderful help as she grew healthier. Continued prayers.)

CONDOLENCES
Jack Spruiell Bottoms
(TJ faculty member, choir)
September 21, 1930 -August 27, 2020
After graduation, Jack began attending college at Sam Houston State Teacher’s College. In 1950, after the outbreak of the Korean War, he joined the United States Air Force and served four years at Randolph Field in San Antonio. In 1953, Jack received his B. S. degree in Chemistry from Sam Houston State Teacher’s College. In 1954, he married Wanda June Walker, and in 1957, Jack received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baylor University. After teaching science for two years in Navasota, Jack and his growing family moved to Port Arthur to teach high school choral music until May 1967. In 1963, he earned his Masters degree, and in 1967 Jack, June and their five children moved to Boulder, Colorado so he could continue his education. Jack received his PhD in Music Education, Music History, Choral Literature and Conducting in 1971 from the University of Colorado.

I was so glad that I didn’t have any classmates to add to the Condolence section this time. At this time, we have a list of 142 KNOWN deceased classmates. Take care during this crazy time and try to enjoy this holiday season. Let me hear from you. How do you think I had information about classmates for this newsletter?
