Feb. 22

from David Lapham

The photo Mike Soileau sent in of the old Dryden Ferry was interesting. I think that was the East Landing (the Bridge City side). The West Landing had a small beach, with the ferry landing at the south edge of the beach. There were still quite a few old pilings from the landing into the early 70's, at least. John Wilson and I used to launch a boat there in order to head up the Neches River to go duck hunting. I had a 14' aluminum 'Jon Boat' and he had a small outboard motor so we combined forces. We had no trailer, so we'd slide the boat into the back of my dad's station wagon, pile the motor, gas tank, life preservers, etc. into the boat and head to the landing. Typically arriving around 4 AM, we'd pull the boat out of the car and set it on the beach. While we waited, we would attach the motor and connect the tank, then put our shotguns and other gear into the boat. When a large ship or a tug pushing loaded barges came by, they'd pull the water out and expose 15-20 feet of beach. We would then move the boat out to where the water had been, climb in, and wait for the water to surge back in so that we could float off without getting our feet wet.

We seldom had much real luck hunting there, and there was that time a Norther came in while we were out. On the way back we stopped to take shelter from the rain and the boat floated away and ended up across the river. We found ourselves stranded on the east side of the river looking at the boat as it lay opposite us, beached on the old Atlantic Richfield refinery property. But, that's a story for another time.

(Thanks for sharing that funny story.  I bet it made some of the guys reminisce about some of their hunting follies.)

TAX SEASON

Classmate and reunion committee treasurer, Bart Darby kindly completed our tax return on our reunion checking account.  It saddens me to say that we are really going to have to tighten our belt!  We had to PAY IN ….. a total of 37 cents!!!!!

Thank you so much, Bart, for doing this every year.  You are a sweetheart.

UPDATED SPREADSHEET INFORMATION

NO ONE moved, changed a mobile number, dropped their landline phone, had a divorce or lost a spouse, or changed their e-mail address.  I am as surprised as you!

NEWS FROM THE HOMEFRONT

New Orleans will never be the same.  My niece is there with my sister (!) for a road trip.  I hope she has a great time.  They sent pictures and she was smiling and acting crazy.  She generally doesn't like to be around noise.  I'm not sure how that is going to work out!  Unless the whole town is on Xanax since I've been there, it really isn't known as a “quiet” place!!

Well, Dad hasn't eaten any more crayolas or legos lately that we know of.  But, I did have to take him to the ER this last Wednesday evening.  His home called me and said that tests showed he had a really bad UTI and his blood pressure was going crazy.  His eyes were glazed over and he wasn't responding to the physical therapist.  So, I took him there and he did have a bad UTI and was given a piggy back bag of antibiotics.  It took 3 nurses/aides to try to get blood from him sticking him two or three times each for other tests.  He SLEPT through it all.  By the way, you have to sign a zillion papers when you get there including one for PRIVACY!  Okay, I get that.  But, for PRIVACY....not if you have four cubicles divided by a CURTAIN.  Did you know that the patient 5 inches away from me and the curtain was in there because she drank 2 ½ cups of gin and her drug she “took” was EMBALMING FLUID?  The doctor asking the questions said in a unbeliveable tone, “FORMALDEHYDE”? The husband said, “No, embalming fluid”.  Really! Are you kidding me? The local bus driver had to call the police because she wouldn't wake up on the bus and it was the end of his shift.

The stories of the three cubicles around us at least made the evening and night interesting.  BUT, they were probably BORED to tears with Dad's situation.  We did get to leave at 1:30 in the morning.  Bad news:  I didn't get to find out the results of the blood work on the poor lady next to us!  Bummer.

Murphy has been on the watch out for the scout of the purple martins.  No luck until last evening and he heard and saw on flying around the neighbors yard.  He is happy now.

(a note from Dianne Dupre)

I'm checking in today to Mid-Jefferson Extended Care facility, where I will be for 3-4 weeks. They will transport me (probably early next week) to the Medical Center, where I will have a pacemaker installed. I hope to be in the hospital for only 24 hours, then back to Mid-Jeff for cardio rehab (and hopefully back physical therapy) for 3-4 weeks. I will post my room number as soon as I get settled in. Please keep me in your prayers, and feel free to come and visit or just call. Love you all and thanks in advance for your prayers and well wishes.

(Dianne is on FB if you would like to post her a message of encouragement.)

Sandra Tauzin Flores' husband, Richard is at home following a quadruple bypass last week.  His diagnosis has changed as they found he does NOT have ALS as first reported.  But, he has nerve damage from discs C 1-7 that needs to be relieved.  In another 3-4 weeks, he will have extensive surgery to try to relieve the pressure on the nerves so that he can get some mobility back.  At this time, he is unable to stand, walk, or eat by himself because of the damage.  Prayers are requested.

My dad's heart is in A-Fib. The cardiologist will do an Echo on Monday to look for blockages and/or clots. If his heart is all clear while dad is out he will try shocking his heart to put it back in rhythm.  The doctor said sometimes this works but not sure if it will or how long it will stay in rhythm if it does work. However, there are medications that can control the A-Fib! He's resting now and feeling better. Just keep him in your prayers please. We want the echo to be clear and the shock to work putting his heart back in rhythm! Thanks again and I'll send an update on Monday!!

CONDOLENCES

I am happy to announce that I haven't received any notices of a classmate's death or even of a family member!!

I did receive the following letter from a classmate's brother that was a help to us.  It started when I contacted him to ask for information on his brother's death so that we would have something proper to put in the MEMORIAL section under his name.  The response is the following:

I am Steve Bertrand's brother, Paul (TJ '70) and had talked online with you four years ago. I was supposed to send you a picture of Steve and his obituary but never got around to it. I do have a picture of him I am sending, and a poem to go with it. His obituary never appeared in the PA News but my sister sent me one to send to you.  Steve died of colon cancer.  He died before any of his grandkids were born, so he never saw any of them. He now has 7 grandkids, the same number as me. I do miss him and wish he was here but I know he is in a better place.

(Please check out Steve's completed memorial in our MEMORIAL section found on our website.

This was a short NEWSLETTER since I had just two letters in MAIL CALL.  Send me news, please.
