MAIL CALL

October 14

from Patricia Patrick Cunningham in St. Petersburg, FL

Thank you for your work on the class web site, I do enjoy reading it. I was trying to fly home from a three week Alaskan trip on the day Hurricane Irma hit St. Pete. My boys stayed and never lost power but did have half a large oak tree split and fall in the yard.  Having no storm surge saved all of the Gulf coast here. Hurricane Harvey did cause water in my middle sister’s house in Houston and down in Aransas Pass there were lots of tree damage to my mom’s house that my sister still has. It was strange to me that all three places I have lived or am living now were struck by hurricanes back to back.

I made it through Harvey here in Houston just fine, but I swear if I ever hear the words "five-day rain event" again, I'm preparing the house and heading to Vegas to wait it out. I was back in Port Arthur a couple of weeks ago, and we drove past my childhood home on El Paso (by El Charro's back in the day); the whole neighborhood was a mess. Diane Richmond Miller had already sent me some pictures, so I was prepared for what she aptly described as a war zone without the dead bodies. Even though our house was up on brick piers and had never flooded before, it had obviously not made it through Harvey unscathed.  I'm afraid Port Arthur will never be the same again.

On a more pleasant note, I just got back from five days in Philadelphia, as a part of my "see America first" campaign. I had never been there, so I just went and rode the hop-on hop-off bus for four days. By the last day I knew the spiel by heart and was prepared to step in for the tour guide if he or she went down. I took the obligatory pictures with the Liberty Bell and Rocky at the National Museum of Art, visited Independence Hall, the Mint, the Franklin Institute (where I saw an exhibit on 3D printing that I finally understood), and the National Constitution Center, just to mention a few of the sights, and drove out to Lancaster County to see all things Amish.  Philadelphia is a lovely city, and I highly recommend a visit there to everyone if you haven't been.

I spent the last 3 days at the Gill Ranch in Corsicana with long time high school friends Lynn Eldridge Gill and Gail Wilson Felker. I haven’t seen Gail since I sang at her wedding 45 years ago! I also sang for Lynn’s wedding also about 45 years ago. We can’t possibly be that old!! We relived Jr. High and High School memories, caught up on the last 45 years, and solved all the world’s problems! What fun to spend time with these fun, Christian ladies!

I hope you were able to catch all of the Astros playoff game and series finale.  For all of us who remember listening to the Houston Buffs, Colt .45s and Astros since the early 60’s it was truly remarkable...especially after the strong, optimistic years that just didn’t pan out! We were so happy for Houston and SETX after such an eventful, rough year.

Things are fine here in central TX.  Lana got an all clear report shortly after completing the oral chemo treatment. We were so thankful at that blessing and greatly appreciate all the words of encouragement and prayer support during the ordeal.

HOW 'BOUT DEM ASTROS!!!!

Wow.  You HAD to be an ASTROS fan last month.   Not only was it exciting but it got our minds off of Hurricane Harvey for awhile.  Proud of them and happy for all that could find excitement in something.   Go “Stros”!

While visiting my parents' grave sites recently, I looked over at Willis “Billy” Fowler's parents' graves that are “two doors down”.  The family had decorated their headstone with Astros balloons and flags!  Adorable!  It made me smile through my tears.

NEWS FROM THE HOMEFRONT

It has been a bit rough around here the last three months.  Since the storm hit, our daughter's house flooded and they moved in, dad died, some tough decisions have been made in my daughter and her children's lives, remodeling has had it's woes, I had a trip to the ER, my sister's dementia has worsened rapidly.  BUT, on a positive note, Murphy is back going to the “beer lease” and I have been staying up watching taped HALLMARK Christmas movies!!! We have really enjoyed being closer in our daughter and two teen granddaughters' lives with them living here.  Keeps you hoppin'  We even get to enjoy their rescued golden retriever, Kye-Leigh.  See, not all bad!!!

Please keep my family in your prayers that the next few weeks and months will end on a more positive note.  That peace and harmony will end the strife in a divided family.

SUPPORT

October 10

from Paul Bertrand '70 (brother of classmate, the late Steven Bertrand)

Our mother passed away last week on Oct. 5th at home. She was 90 years old and the last of her generation in my family.

She had evacuated for the storm and had been home for awhile when she fell and broke her hip. Her house didn't flood since it was in an old section of Port Arthur and was up on piers. She made it out of the hospital and was on hospice when she had a stroke. She went down quickly after that and died 3 days later. It's hard to grasp that she won't be there when I go back to visit. I am now the oldest since the passing of my older brother and sister.

I have a niece and nephew in Port Arthur whose homes flooded during the storm. FEMA finally got around to their houses this week to do their inspection. I don't know what will happen to them and if they will get any help or not. They are both currently at my mom's house.

My granddaughter, MaLeigha, broke her fibula in volleyball practice.  She will have surgery and will need to be in a cast and boot for 8 weeks.

Update:

MaLeigha's surgery went well today.  A plate and six screws later, all is good.  Thank you for your prayers.

         from Pat Trahan Knox

I had my appointment at Fondren this past Tuesday with a hand specialist with

with a wonderful reputation.  We were there all day since they had to call and get updated test results from Beaumont Bone & Joint.  I had a CAT scan and apparently, my “healed” wrist wasn't totally healed.  I also saw an occupational therapist who made me a new splint.  With the holidays coming up, I will probably go back to Fondren in January or February. If I find out that surgery will enable me to have a more functional hand, we will consider that.  But, if the surgery would be purely aesthetic, I probably will not choose the surgery option.

I am so blessed to have seen such a wonderful doctor at Fondren.  I thank each and everyone of you who have remembered me in your prayers; they have been uplifting!  Now, we hope for the best. Blessings to each of you who are so dear to me.

Charlie and I have been so crazy but I found out, after visits to the Opthamologist, the Neurosurgeon and many many tests, etc., that I have an aneurysm behind my right eye that is pressing on the optic nerve causing a blind spot in my eye.  They will go in through the artery in my leg, go through the heart and through the carotid artery into my head and will inject platinum coils into the aneurysm and then stent it off so it can't rupture and cause a lot of damage!!  Just a small procedure- lololololol!!  Say prayers that all goes well.
