MAIL CALL

from Fred McCarty in Kingwood

Thanks for the website update.   As always, I read the entire update including the newsletter, and I thought it was very nice of you to remember classmates who have lost their father in the past year. Just so you are aware, George Collins recently told me his father had passed away earlier this year at the age of 100. As far as I know, your Dad is now the only father of a classmate who is still living after the age of 101. I wish him a Happy Father's Day.

I appreciate all that you and Mike do to help our classmates stay in touch, and I am looking forward to being at our 50th Reunion next year.

(Thanks for the information about George's dad.  I did hear recently that Janis Nunez' dad is 100.  I haven't been able to confirm it, yet.)

Mary Bess Rizer Johnson and I have just returned from a trip to

Tanzania and Zanzibar. The game drives in the Serengetti were amazing. We

stayed in a tented camp with a bucket, taking showers. It was quite an

experience. We feel very blessed to still be able to do these crazy trips

we do. We laugh and share old memories as well. I pray for all of you and

your loved ones. Life is a journey. I try to remember that every day is a

gift.

from Cherlyn Hebert in Houston

In early May, Linda Smith Webber and I went to "Vegas, Baby" for a few days. We are proud to announce that we stimulated the economy there; I even got a personal thank you from the mayor on my way out of town.  LOL  But we did use Uber for the first time and feel like real pros now. Everything is fine with me here in Houston. I stay busy with my volunteering, bowling, church and just plain ol' running the roads for one thing or another. A whole day at home is a treat now. But I love all my activities and wouldn't want to give any of them up.

MILITARY

Billy Caldwell was gracious enough to send me some pictures of his military days in the Army as a gunner during the Vietnam War.  He also sent information about where he was stationed.  Thanks for adding to our military section and THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE, friend.

NICK'S GROCERY AND MKT.

If you have ever eaten boudain (boudin), more than likely it was from Nick's Grocery on 39th Street in Pear Ridge.  Well, you are now out of luck.  The doors have officially closed.  The store opened in 1959 right down the block from Sam Houston Elementary.  I'm sure many of you dropped in there to get some bread, soda pop and candy, also.

50th REUNION NEWS

The committee held our first meeting on June 27 to begin planning for the 50th reunion.

The officers elected were:

Chairperson: Linda DeCuir McFadden

Vice Chairperson: Bobby Williamson

Secretary: Ernie Castaneda Bullion

Treasurer: Bart Darby

(tenative reunion dates)

July 27, 2018   Social

July 28, 2018   Dance/Mixer

July 29, 2018   Breakfast

Venues should be confirmed soon.

The committee members are now working on confirming and changing information on our spreadsheet from the last reunion four years ago.  They will try to contact you by e-mail, snail mail, text, landlines or old fashioned ways like STALKING.  Lol   Please help us in advance by contacting me of any changes.

Now, don't go planning CRUISES, vacations, grandbaby births (talk to those kiddoes of yours NOW, etc) so that you will be able to RECONNECT with friends from your neighborhoods, schools, churches, classes, clubs, teams, etc.  Fifty years is a long time and some of you have not been back to the area in many, many years.  We are excited and are trying to make this reunion even MORE SPECIAL than the previous ones.  Some of you might think you need to go on a diet, touch up that gray hair, grow a head taller....don't worry.  Your “chairperson” won't be able to do any of that, so don't fret!

HOPE TO SEE MANY OF YOU AT THE 50th IN 2018!

SUPPORT

from Lee Benedetto Martin in Tigard, OR

Here is the latest update on my daughter, Brandi's MS battle. Please keep prayers coming.  She was accepted for a transplant but her insurance has denied paying for it. Dr Bert is working on an appeal. I believe that somehow the funds will become available as God will clear the way. Thanks for your interest, support and prayers.

June 25

Please remember my grandson, 15 year old Nate, in your prayers on Wednesday. He will have surgery to remove his pacemaker/defib. after almost 10 years. His surgery will be at 8:00 at Texas Children's Hospital.

Update on Nate--his surgery was about three hours. Maggie said all went well. He will be in ICU for 4-6 hours to ensure no bleeding. Hopefully he can come home tonight. Time will tell.

Latest update--my baby is on his way home!!! He is doing great. Maggie says he hasn't even had anything for pain. I am so proud of him. Thank you to each of you for prayers and words of encouragement. Couldn't have done this without you! Love all of you.
