TJ Class of '68     NEWSLETTER                                                     03/30/08

I've been enjoying my daughter and son-in-law's home building in Lumberton but can't go there often enough because of the high gas prices!  I am really enjoying the spring weather and watching the leaves pop out over night on the trees.  Spring has definitely sprung!

MAIL CALL

from Patti Farley D'Amico in Alexandria, LA
I have been very quiet and not sent news or pictures, etc.  I did however, want to let you know that I enjoy the e-mails.

from Mike Soileau in Atlanta, TX
I was emailing back and forth with one of our old classmates, thanks again to you and Mike for helping us keep in touch,  and just thought I would share my email part of a conversation..  This isn't pointing fingers, but I see my poor Dad who is in and out of the hospital and the doctors telling him it is because of his smoking. He does not seem to be able to quit or does not want to.  I'm just saying this cause I love you guys and gals out there.  We need to be as smart as we can to try to enjoy a healthy life.  I'm on a diet right now .. haha;.. on and off of course,.. but like our parents use to say when they would whip us,  "This is for your own good,"  or "This is gonna hurt you more than it will hurt me"..yea.. (oh God Forbid in this day and age!!).  Thank God I got a loving whipping or would probably be in prison or something.  Anyway, the point is, if you're a smoker or dipper .. (yep, if it feels good or tastes good  ... IT AIN'T GOOD FER YA!!)  ... Dang, where did all that come from? .. I guess my dad being in the hospital today and all because of smoking ... pulled it out of me.

On a lighter touch.. I love this weather and have been catching some good fish.

God Bless ya all

See below the short email that started my sermon   :)

Happy Easter.  Sad to hear about  Wayne Ransonette ... too many of us passing too soon .   I don't know if you still smoke, but as I glanced through the memorial of our deceased classmates, I remember too well many of them were smokers.  I tried myself but never took up  the habit.

Ya' know it was the cool thing back then and was encouraged by so many ads and even our government handed out free cigarettes in World War II.  Did not mean to get off on a soap box .. I hope you and yours had a very Happy Easter.. the eggs and all. :)

from Liz Hall in Lubbock
I will not be able to attend the reunion and I regret that.  My husband and I have had a trip to Scotland planned for some time.  We leave on July 31 and return on Aug 13.  We will spend two days in Edinburgh and attend the Military Tattoo, then off to the west coast for a three day cruise of the lochs on a wooden boat that carries only six couples.  You can check it out at www.themajesticline.co.uk.  Then up north for some golf and home.  I really like hearing from everyone and appreciate all the work you on the newsletter.  I just emailed Jane Lippincott to share my colon cancer story with her since I read her husband was diagnosed with it.  Can't wait to see the reunion report in a newsletter.

Because you published Linda Clause's phone number on the last newsletter, I did call her and we had a nice chat. She seems to be doing well and I tried to convince her to be at the 40 year reunion (she said she may). Glynn and I were in Port Arthur last weekend for the all-Bishop Byrne reunion and we stayed with our classmate Tommy Romero and his wife Linda. Linda is from the PNG class of '67 and she and I met in cosmetology school together.

from Tommy Thompson in Conroe
Sheila and I just got back from Vegas, I had to go on business (ConExpo). Great place, but I'm getting to old to enjoy it like I did when I was younger. We got in late last night and tonight we are baby sitting our 1 yr old grand-daughter. If I wasn't worn out from Vegas, I am now.

I spoke with Larry's Speake's family and they are still planning to come to the reunion. I can't wait for everyone to meet them. At Dad and Mom's Memorial Service, I was blessed with the attendance of 3 people who are very special to me, Fred McCarty, Webb Draughon, and Gary Hammond. I've tried, but I will never be able to make them understand what it meant to me. Well, I guess I will see everyone in August.

PS. I think I may have James Hubert coming.  If anyone wants to help apply the pressure, email me and I will give you his email address.

LOCATING FACULTY MEMBERS

from Fred McCarty in Kingwood
I just read the latest Newsletter and as usual really enjoyed it. When George Collins, Joel Levy, David Salter and I had dinner in February we reminisced about TJ Basketball. We wondered if Coach Wayne Williams was still around, and we thought it would be great to see him. Please add him to the list of Faculty to be invited to the Reunion, if you have or can locate his address information.

Well, I was hoping to get responses from some of you about the whereabouts of our former faculty members.  NOPE.  Not a one of you. (Susan Hatfield did tell me a few weeks ago that Dr. McBee still lived on Lakeshore in PA.)   I really don't have the time to check on the information without help.  I would LOVE to hear from you about this concern.  It would be wonderful to have some of our former advisors and mentors to join in on our fun.  Let me hear from you. (Jayne Smith, Doris Crisp, Lionel Rowland, Hugh LeBaron, and Nancy McClain are on my current e-mail list.  I hope they contact me with some of their former co-worker's info.)

REUNION NEWS

The committee chose our two winners in the raffle drawing for the EARLY BIRD INTERNET special.  Those two classmates will be revealed at the reunion.  Postcards are going out to those that we haven't heard from.  Don't throw them away if you don't think you will join us.  You might change your mind at a later date and you will need the information.  We apologize if we send you one and you have already contacted us.  Things happen.  :-(

We have "thrown around" the idea of giving cash or gift cards (maybe VISA check cards, etc.) out for contest or door prizes.  But, we would need contributions from some of you that might own a company that could DONATE cards for this cause.  What do you think?    Let me know.

Linda Gothia is again heading up the decorations for the reunion.  I think that our class has the most beautiful reunions of ALL of the classes.  We hear such wonderful comments from our classmates AND classmates attending from other years.  Prepare to be dazzled.  Many of us have NOT and probably WILL not ever get to Hawaii, so this is as good as it gets!!!  Guys, be on the lookout for a good looking Hawaiian shirt to dazzle us.  I know that Raymond Belz went to Hawaii to get his!  Lucky thing!

Don't forget to bring your CAMERAS to the reunion. (Have your name on it somewhere.  I left mine at a previous reunion and Carl Guidry '67 found it and graciously returned it to me the following week because of the label I had on it.  Whew!).   We hope to have an area set up for Elementary school photos.  We are also working on having a backdrop for "couple" pictures.  We will try to set aside an area for impromtu groups who would like to gather and take snapshots.  Also, we want you to take loads of photos to send us for the website.  Can't wait to see you there.

PROUD TO BE A TEXAN

Look at Texas on a world map.  That picture, with the Panhandle and the Gulf Coast, and the Red River, and the Rio Grande is as much a part of you as anything ever will be.  As soon as anyone anywhere in the world looks at it, they know what that shape is.  It's TEXASTexas is the AlamoTexas is 183 men standing in a church, facing thousands of Mexican nationals, fighting for freedom, who had the chance to walk out and save themselves, but stayed instead to fight and die for the cause of freedom.    We send our kinds to schools named William B. Travis, James Bowie, and Crockett.  Texas is Sam Houston capturing Santa Anna at San JacintoTexas is huge forests of piney woods like the Davy Crockett National Forest.  Texas is breathtaking mountains in the Big BendTexas is the unparalleled beauty of bluebonnet fields in the Texas Hill Country.  Texas is the beautiful, warm beaches of the Gulf Coast of South Texas.  Texas is the shiny skycrapers in Houston and Dallas.  Texas is Mexican food like nowhere else, not even MexicoTexas is the Fort Worth stockyards, the Ballpark in Arlington and the Reliant Stadium.  Texas is larger-than-life legends like Michael DeBakey, Denton Cooley, Willie Nelson, Buddy Holly, Gene Autry, Audie Murphy, Tommy Lee Jones, Janis Joplin, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson, Nolan Ryan, George H. W. Bush, LBJ, and Babe Zaharias Didrikson.  Texas is NASA, DELL, COMPAQ.  Texas is huge herds of cattle and miles of crops. Texas is home to the most amazing sunsets of gold over an empty field. Texas is hundreds of deer running around neighborhoods and fields.  Texas is a place where towns and cities shut down to watch the local high school football game on Friday nights.  To drive across Texas is to drive 1/4 the way across the United StatesTexas is ocean beaches, deserts, lakes and rivers, mountains, prairies, and modern cities.  If it isn't in Texas, you probably don't need it.  By federal law, Texas is the only state in the U.S. that can fly it's flag at the same height as the U.S. flad because it is the only state that was a Republic before it became a state.  Thank God for Texas!!!

CRAWFISH (aka Crayfish) SEASON

Legend has it that crawfish are descendants of the Maine lobster. After the Acadians (now called Cajuns) were exiled in the 1700s from Nova Scotia, the lobsters yearned for the Cajuns so much that they set off cross the country to find them.  This journey, over land and sea, was so long and treacherous that the lobsters began to shrink in size.  By the time they found the Cajuns in Louisiana , they had shrunk so much that they hardly looked like lobsters anymore. A great festival was held up their arrival, and this smaller lobster was renamed crawfish.

NEWS FROM THE HOMEFRONT

Shhh.  Don't tell anyone but, knock on wood, all has been well lately with the parents here.  Mom and Dad spent Easter weekend at my brother's in Friendswood.  They had a great time visiting with grandkids and great-grandkids living in that area.  My brother-in-law came home from his 35-day hospital stay and is doing "okay".  He has been depressed since the stroke and is working with home health on lots of areas.  My sister is really going around in circles with all the changes that have to be made due to this situation.  Due to some blood test irregularities, she was forced to get off of her bipolar medicine until later.  This has certainly made life very stressful for all involved.  Please keep them in your prayers.

from Mr. Lionel Rowland (history teacher) GREAT REPORT!!!!!
Shaaron and I met with the doctor at MD Anderson (actually the doctor's assistant) to get the results of the latest Pet-scan .  She characterized it as a "very good report."  The areas of concern that showed up in the last Pet-scan on the lungs and liver are gone.  Also, the area on the spine has decreased significantly.  Finally, the tumor in the esophagus has decreased by almost two-thirds.  We will begin another round of chemo with one treatment every other week.  Doing great, feeling good.  We are excited and praising God for the good report.

After re-reading and editing my NEWSLETTER, I realized that I have really given you a lot to think about and also to respond to.  I hope that you have a paper and pencil handy when you read it so that you can take information down and jot reminders to yourself.  I would appreciate it.  Please send in grandchildren pics and memories for the I REMEMBER WHEN.  Show your support for all mentioned when you can find the time.  Military pics would also be appreciated.  Tell us if you have family members for us to pray for and send encouraging words.
