TJ Class of '68     NEWSLETTER                                                           05/10/08

Happy Mother's Day to all!  It is a beautiful weekend and I hope it will be fun for all of you.  It is bittersweet over at our house.  Murphy's mom passed away last week and we buried her on Thursday, May 1.  It is a sad time and will be really hard for us on Mother's Day. We are certainly at the age where we read about our classmate parents' deaths weekly in the obituary.  So, on a more joyous note, let's hear from our friends and find out what is happening in their lives.

MAIL CALL
from Pamela Owings Hund in Port Neches
I laughed at Danny Landry's note and cringed at Debbie Borres' mail in the last NEWSLETTER dated (4/26/08).   How many times have I heard something age-related on television or in books  and they mention people in their 50's as being old?  I'm with Danny.  I'll never buy one of those pills, either. Debbie's mail made me cringe because we are leaving one week from today for a cruise on Carnival. I'm nervous enough as it is (Poseidon Adventure just played again and also a man was killed by a shark in California).  We are going to Progresso and Cozumel, so I know that shark is a long way off.  I can only hope our cruising experience is better than hers.
(Hope you have a great cruise experience.  Tell us all about it when you return.)

from Janis Hamilton Lee in Pt. Neches
My tennis team won for this area so we'll be in Dallas Aug 1-3.  Hopefully I'll make the 45th class reunion in 2013!!!  I'm sure you'll have a good turnout & take lots of pictures.
(We will miss your sweet smile.  Lots of luck and we wish for "cool" weather for you in Dallas....don't count on it, though.)

from Jeanette Constantine Morgan in Groves
My sister-in-law said she has never gotten a post-card about the reunion.  She is our classmate Arleen "Becky"  Morgan Jackson.   Also, I wanted to know if you thought that I could invite Kim Hebert to the reunion.  She moved to Sabine Pass and did not graduate with us but went to Franklin and Woodrow with us and maybe 1 year at TJ.  I don't know if she would come but I would like to give her the option.
(Thanks so much for informing us of a classmate that didn't receive a reunion notice.  Also, we would love to send an invite to Kim.  Anyone else that wants us to send a card to someone, please contact me.  Everyone is welcome.)

from Beth Anne Sutherlin Coakley in Bedford, TX
We are going to be grandparents again in December.....yeah!!!

from Billy Jordan in Decatur, Alabama
Just to let you know I have sent off my check to Kay this morning for the reunion.
(Okay Billy's friends, David Williams, John Wilson, Allen Baldridge, & Terry Watson.  Why haven't we heard from any of you about coming to the reunion?  Hope you are coming.)

from Yvonne Sutherlin (TJ '49)
(Beth Anne's mom)
The TJ website is great - wish my class of '49 was smart enough to have something like this.  I work for Dr. Monroe at  Lamar State College - Port Arthur and he keeps me really busy.   I am one of the authors who have written a new history book about South Jefferson County Water, Rails and Oil which will be on sale at the Museum during your reunion.    If the class members are interested, they can purchase the book in the Museum ONLY and I can autograph it for them if they would like.    We have just finished editing the 4th final manuscript from the publisher and continue to find major errors.   It is really a hassle.... and takes hours of time.  We will have a new exhibit up in time for your reunion.  "A Whimsical World:  The Art of BIll Sizemore."  Bill is the husband of Dr. Kathleen Carabelle, a local doctor (you may remember that her father was an eye doctor here),  and the paintings are marvelous.  I am sure you will enjoy.  Our museum has a great collection and I know all of the PA grads coming back for the reunion will really be pleased. I am also assisting a grad student from the University of Arizona on his thesis project about shipyards in the area during WW II.   I am on the Mayor's list for any and all questions and articles about PA History and on and on and on.....
(The museum that Mrs. Sutherlin is speaking of is the MUSEUM of the GULF COAST.  It is a wonderful, enlightening tour of our area and includes our local "celebrities".  You can learn more on their website  www.museumofthegulfcoast.org  The museum is located on Procter Street.

REUNION TIDBITS
Kay Campbell Netherland (reunion chairman) has been receiving a handful of checks but she is getting a little worried!  Even though lots of classmates have WRITTEN to me in my NEWSLETTER over the months that they are "excited" about the reunion, we haven't received checks from the many of them.  I know of classmates that have never missed a reunion have just let the $$$ thing slip their mind.  Go ahead while you are reading this and write us a check and send it in.  At the last committee meeting, we put together our finances and found that we aren't going to be able to splurge on the terrific decorations that Linda Gothia (head of the decorating committee) had planned unless we get more money soon since we will need to order them.  We have always had such a great reputation for going all-out decorating the hall.  Another item we noticed was that a big chunk of the classmates that have signed up are from out-of-town.  Now, over the years the comments we hear from some area classmates are "I see everyone I want to see already."  Well, how do you know that until you show up and see everyone? The out-of-towners expect to see YOU!   So, be a sport and send in some of your REFUND from the GOVERNMENT.  It won't hurt for long and I won't have to beg again next NEWSLETTER.  The reunion is actually around the corner for the PLANNERS.

SUPPORT NEEDED
from Billy Jordan in Decatur, AL
My grandson has been diagnosed with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, which is low blood platelets.  He feels fine but is bruising a lot.  His platelet count is below 10,000 when normal is 150,000 to 400,000.  The concern is bleeding.  His immune system has been battling a virus and began to attack his platelets.  He was referred to Children's Hospital in Birmingham.  He has had three different types of treatment and none of them has worked.  He is now on a fourth treatment using a high powered steroid.  He is not bleeding from his mouth or nose but if he would hit his head hard, there is concern that he could bleed in his brain.  We all are very concerned and have our whole church praying for him.
(Well, now you have 420 classmates and their families added to the prayer circle!  That ought to get attention!  Keep us posted on his condition.)

wife, Linda Messer Jones ('66)
I'm writing this from MD Anderson. We are awaiting the final results of the blood work - these will be ok - so that Doctor's orders can be written on the chemotherapy for today. Recall, Linda is starting a different drug - Doxil.   Linda's checkup, dental work healing, and brief physical are all ok.  Doxil has a side effect we hope we don't have to contend with - rash and severe drying of the palms and soles of the feet.  Next update will be on June 2.

Angel In Disguise...

She brings me a rainbow
Whenever dark clouds appear.
Just the sound of her voice
Takes away my fear.
She has a hero's strength
And can lend some needed steel,
Yet she's as soft as a daisy,
And has a gift to calm and heal.
She often forgets her own needs
In her desire to comfort and please,
And she mends wounds and broken hearts
With a doctor's ease.
She saw me off each morning
And tucked me in safely each night,
Ever working her hardest
To make my whole world bright.
Through example she taught me
What love is all about,
And she's the one person
That I couldn't live without.
Look and you'll find great wisdom
And kindness in her eyes,
And though I call her mother,
she's an angel in disguise.

Happy Mother's Day!

I'm finished on my end.  Now it is your turn to do your part.  That would be to send in photos, memories, mail call, write support and condolences, and send in your reunion money that you keep forgetting to do.
