MAIL CALL

from Carol Babin Prejean in Arlington
This is a good news, bad news story.  The good news is my son, Ashton, is getting married but the bad news is that the wedding is Aug. 2nd.  So, for the first time since our reunions have begun, we won't be attending.  Be sure to send my regards to everyone and tell them all that I will miss seeing them.

from Ricky & Gloria Phillips Bradley in Mustang, OK
We've been running hard of late.  Did a 7 night cruise in April to Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel, a week later we did a time share week in Branson, MO and 2 weeks later flew down to Cozumel for a week of some premo scuba diving, eating too much and laying around under the cabana.  Been home 2 weeks cutting the grass, trimming trees, weeding garden, spraying the pastures and playing with the grandsons.  We'll be heading down to Toledo Bend on June 16th for a week at my sisters and hopefully catch a military hop in July to Florida to scuba with the manatees.  Our plans are to make the trip down to PA for the reunion, however we haven't made any reservations and will probably just show up.

from Carmen Babin Hardy in Port Acres
We will be in Tennessee the weekend of the reunion.  I know it's going to be loads of fun, and I will be thinking of all of you.

from Butch McWilliams in Dallas
I have not signed up for the reunion because we have our company picnic on August 2. However, it does not start until 4:00 pm in the afternoon so I’m considering coming in Friday but then having to turn around Saturday morning and drive back, just a 6 hour drive. I will make a decision in the next few days probably more like a week or so. I’m guessing that I can send a check to Kay for Friday night.

from Gloria Faye Burks Scott in Bryan/College Station
I have some great news to add to the newsletter.  On May 17, 2008, my son Blake Edward Fowler and his wife Amanda Fowler welcomed into the world their second child, another son, Owen David Fowler.  He was 20 inches long and 7 lbs. 4 oz.  His big brother Luke Edward is 2 years old.  This is my 6th grandchild.  Just had to spread the good news!

from Sandy Ellis MacNamara in Elgin, TX
Done - the check is really in the mail.  I finally got my dear husband, Paul - to agree to being my date.  Until tonight he would only agreed to going to Port Arthur with me to eat at the Schooner.  He has been heart broken that Don's Seafood is gone............ Tonight I told him that Robert McClintock and I were going to run away to the Big Oaks club and drink Tom Collins if he would not be my date.  He reluctantly agreed if I promised to take HIM instead to The Big Oaks and do the Harlem Shuffle with him - afterwards he wants to see Lou Ann's.  WOW - wouldn't that be fun???  Of course I promised that the Boogie Kings would be playing.

SO,we will be at the reunion with bells on.  I am so looking forward to seeing everyone.  I talked to David Elliott yesterday and I do believe he is sending his check today, too.  It IS going to be tough on us not having Clifford Antone there - I will miss my usual slow dance with him - damn it - it is hard to believe that he has been gone for two years.

Well girl - we are off for a weekend in Port Aransas - gotta stick my tootsies in the Gulf and eat some shrimp - maybe some fish too.  I will do the same in August - and of course shake my tail feathers and visit with my dear friends and family.

from Raymond Belz in Tyler
I am  looking forward to the reunion.   The check is in the mail.  I have just retired, Feb. 2008, after 30 yrs In Perfusion. It was hard to walk away, but my old  legs just would not go any longer.

from Paula Iles Restrepo '69
In answer to the mention of the man killed by a shark in California in the last NEWSLETTER, I knew him.  Not well, but I lived in Southern California from 1970-80, and in Solana Beach with 3 other girls from my church there from 1976-80.  One of my former roommates was a veterinarian, and just out of vet school, she joined the household of 4 girls there that I was living in and joined Dave Martin in his practice on Hwy 101.  I went to the clinic with Leslie a few times for various reasons (I had a cat.)  She surfed also and had a good working relationship with Dave who was married and once the 4 of us roommates housesat the Martin's home.  I was shocked when I read of it and I remembered his friendly big smile they talked about.  Leslie left the practice several years later and lives in Colorado now.    She had not been in contact with him in quite some time but was greatly saddened too.

from Barbara King Ringgold in Naples, FL
I have sent payment for the reunion for four tickets.  My sister, Dinah King '66, and our spouses will be attending.  I'm excited to see the homeland and childhood friends.

from Cherlyn Hebert in Houston
Well, I got back from my Wild West Adventure last week.  It was fabulous but I don't think I'll be ready for another two-week car trip for a LONG time.  Lots of driving, moving around and early starts to the day.  As a quick summary, we spent a little time in Colorado, Salt Lake City (with snow!!), Vegas, the Grand Canyon and Phoenix before heading home.  Besides the Grand Canyon, we also saw Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park.  Highlights were a helicopter ride at the Grand Canyon and a hot air balloon ride in Phoenix; both firsts for me.  I know the high gas prices make car trips less practical nowadays, but I highly recommend taking advantage of what's in our own backyard, so to speak.  I will never forget seeing the Grand Canyon from the air and actually getting a little choked up at this marvel.  I kept telling everyone that, if the Grand Canyon was in Houston, we'd be building condos in it right now!   LOL

Anyway, except for the reunion, I'm Houston-bound now until October when a friend and I are doing a girls' week at an oceanfront beach house on Tybee Island, 18 miles from Savannah.  We are promising ourselves to just take it easy and not wear ourselves out, which is sounding really good to me right now.  The beach house comes with a blender, so I see a margarita or two in our futures. See you at the reunion in August.

from Peggy Foster Hoyt in Huntsville, TX
I will be out of town reunion weekend, but I am sure everyone will have a blast.  Nothing going on here--after school is out I usually hibernate for a week to recouperate.

from Mike Soileau in Atlanta, TX
I  have been busy ... too busy, but that is the way our lives are these days.  I am coming to the reunion, I been planning on getting down there and giving you my money for the tickets, but I may have to resort to the old fashion way ... just sending it by mail :)  I know the committee has been working hard .. thanks!!.  The older we get the more effort these things take, least it takes me more effort to do stuff, but I been blessed... not complaining.  Tell all the hard workers we all know they are making a sacrifice and it is well noted and appreciated. Will see you soon.  I have a trip planned to go down to see Dad and will make the rounds.  I am sure our reunion will be a success .. due to all ya'lls efforts .. they always are

from Felicia (Hiatt) and David Petit in Texas City
We really wish we could come to the reunion, but we have a trip planned to San Diego.   David has a conference out there each year and I tag along.  We have to be in San Diego August 2nd and we're driving. We're also waiting for grandbaby #4 to come.  He's due July 29th as of right now.  Adam and his wife Celeste didn't plan that around our vacation either.  We're all going to Ruidoso, New Mexico June 14th for a week(David,me, Rachel & Stephen, their kids Arwen & Logan, Adam & Celeste, and their son Connor).  We'll take a big family picture and send it to the website.  We LOVE being grandparents.  It is truly such a blessing.  I have ONE more day of school and then I'm FREE for the summer.  It's been a great school year.  Rachel just got a new teaching position with Dickinson High School teaching 10th grade World History.  With high gas prices, that's a lot closer to home for her.  David and I are going to work 2 more years and then hang it up.  Can't wait.  Dance a dance for us at the reunion.  I'll be looking forward to seeing pictures of the get-together on the web page.

from Bill Horton in Austin
I do plan to attend the reunion, if I'm not on a family vacation. We are planning to take a vacation in August (going west, not east and passing through PA) but we don't have the dates figured out. The 10-year reunion was the last one I went to. It was a lot of fun but there has always been some conflict on the reunions since that one.

I was in PA last weekend to visit my Mom and had a great time. We ate at Larry's French Market for the first time.  When we were at Larry's, I said that there were probably some people in there that I went to high school with but I couldn't recognize them. We also toured Shangri La Gardens in Orange.

from Jack Atkins in Austin
I should be at the reunion.  I haven't missed any yet. I can blame my wife for not sending the check.  The post card is on her desk.

from Jane Lippincott Koerth in Port Neches
Well, the time has finally come to an end as of Sat. at 1 or whenever I finally clean my classroom out completely.  You can add some news to our website that I am finally retired after 27 years.  Some of our classmates might be interested that my first teaching job was at Edison Junior High teaching Home Economics and then later Thomas Jefferson and then back to Lamar University with more certification in elementary education and spending the last 19 years at Van Buren Elementary in the Groves.  It was a wonderful experience and I think I am ready for some different experiences like playing with our granddaughter, Taylor, and doing a little traveling.

from Ike Landry in Woodville
Ok, OK,ok or ok!!!  I will be sending in my money this weekend for the reunion because of you and Darrell Richerson and my "little sis", Janette Light  Norton. It is really just me being too busy and running everywhere!

from Rachel Burton Wheeler in Bridge City
I will see you at the reunion, if not sooner!  Come on,  you super-class of 68....the rest of us are so anxious to know what in the world you are up to and where you are.  Are you well?  Are you behaving?  Do you have any memories of the rest of us?  Any problems that we could say a prayer for?  How about your business or career that you want to promote?  Linda has really gotten me enthused about this website because she has dedicated so much to it save a letter each month or so.  We really need to all drop her a little line now and then to let her know that we are still kicking and want to stay in the loop or I get the feeling that she is going to get discouraged. Thanks to all of you who contribute to our website.

from Terry Watson in Richardson
Nancy and I are in.  Check is in the mail.  Do I have time to lose twenty or thirty pounds and become successful and prosperous between now and August 1? Something tells me I waited too long.

from Pamela Owings Hund in Port Neches
I'm a little late with my cruise information but I just wanted to say we didn't run into any of the problems that Debbie Desmond ran into--thank goodness! I was nervous when we first started out but I loved looking at the ocean. Our room had a big window and I'd wake up in the middle of the night just to look out. I loved the beach in Cozamel (somebody please correct the spelling for me) and loved swimming in the clear water. I didn't like the rocky bottom. Progresso was nice, too, but I thought Cozamel was better. Every time I turned around somebody was grabbing us and taking our pictures. The part I really really hated was waiting in line to go through customs. It was the longest line I have ever seen. We stood in it for three hours. I was glad to be home but my husband was wishing we had a few more days on the ship
.

from Donnie Beagle in Houston
The website is great! I can't wait to see everyone again at the reunion.

from Sandra Nicks Kelly in Taylorsville, NC
My grandson James is graduating next weekend June 6. He has a full ride scholorship at Gardner-Webb University here in NC for football. Hopefully he can go pro ( another Gary Hammond). He got 2 other offers for full rides for track- from Charleston Southern University and Presbyterian University- he told them he was Sorry but already has a full scholorship but Thanks anyway. He is graduating with High Honors too. He was Senior Prom King, then first in SC for Shot putt and second in SC for Discus. Hopefully, I will be able to send pictures of him next article. My garden and orchard are doing great this year and maybe We can make a profit from them. I am trying to figure out how to send a photograph of my Marine and also of my son in the Air Force- both retired now,  to you for the military photos of the website. When I get them into my computer, I will email a copy to you.I enjoy reading the tjhs 1968 and have been in contact with some old friends because of it. THANKS.

from Sara Hefty Edwards in Beaumont
I've been remiss in my reservation for the reunion.  My middle child is expecting her first baby mid-August.  I doubt that will interfere with our reunion, but I haven't been able to think past that.  I PROMISE I'll get it in the mail this week-end.  This will be my first grandchild on this continent.  My son and two granddaughters are in Melbourne, Australia, so  you can see why this baby is extra special for me.    Have you heard from Lynn Eldridge or Carolyn McCollum

from David Weldon in Decatur, TX
Not sure I'll be able to make the reunion this year. I'll know by the end of June.  I'm starting a new job with the U.S. Forest Service here in Decatur with two new employees to train.   I'll have Recreation, Minerals, Lands, Fire and Special Uses.   Smokey Bear will be kept busy. I'm headed to a Jazz Festival in Jackson Hole, Wyoming with my brother, Gary, at the end of July.  Two of our sons,  Ryan and Clint, are joining us, so we're looking forward to that week.  Eric, 23, is back in Baghdad with the 10th. Mtn. Division.  He's doing fine and will be back home next February.  Barry, 35, is still recuperating from his injuries at Ft. Hood and is doing fine also.

from Lynn Eldridge Gill in Dallas
We're headed to a beach house in Galveston on May 30th--with the kids, grandkids, and the dogs. We will be there a week.  Really looking forward to it.

from Richard Daniels in Beaumont
Shame on you for shaming me into sending you a check for the reunion, Linda Lu!  But, consider me properly shamed.  I'll get a check to Kay in the next couple of days.  Please accept and pass on my sympathies to Murphy regarding the death of his Mom.  My mom has been battling rectal cancer for a couple of years now, but she's hanging in there nicely!

Don't really have anything new to report except that I finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up:   RETIRED!!  Actually, I'm just kidding because we are having a blast with our software business, and I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I didn't work.

Has anyone heard anything more about Tommy Theriot's ('67) health?  I know that late in 2006 he had undergone surgery for brain cancer and was receiving radiation/chemo treatments, but that's the last I heard.  Maybe Fred McCarty knows the latest.
Thanks to you and Mike for all your hard work.

from Skippy Cole in Louisiana
Both of my parents came from Louisiana. They moved here, Port Arthur, after World War II  when my Dad went to work at Gulf Oil. I wonder how many of our classmates have Cajun ancestry?  If so, let us know.  When someone asks me, " Where are you from?"  I reply, " I was born in Texas, but probably bred in Louisiana."  Looking forward to seeing everyone, in Texas, August 1st at the reunion.

GULF COAST JAM

Percy Sledge part of “fantastic” Gulf Coast Jam lineup
By Darragh Doiron
The Port Arthur News
Promoter Don Ball reports this year’s Gulf Coast Jam will mark the first time Percy Sledge and The Fabulous Boogie Kings have shared a stage. “We have got a fantastic lineup,” Ball said about the concert, set for Saturday,
Aug. 9, at the Port Arthur Civic Center. Louisiana Express, Eazy, Jerry LaCroix and G.G. Shinn will be part of the show, Ball said. Though the Boogie Kings have had many “farewell” tours, Ball said popular demand from fans is such that they have since gone back to the studio to make another recording.

RETIREMENT PLANNING for 2008

  • If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.
  • With Enron, you would have had $16.50 left of the original $1000.00.
  • With WorldCom, you would have had less than $5.00 left.
  • If you had purchased $1000.00 of Delta Air Lines stock you would have $49.00 left.
  • But, if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling, you would have had $214.00.

So, based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

It's called the 401-Keg Plan.

NEWS FROM THE HOMEFRONT

Gee whiz!  One step forward, two steps back!  Mom was just about over the compression fracture in her back when she decided to trip in the garage and fracture her knee cap!  So, between the two parents and Murphy (he had a couple of yearly doctor appts.), we had, (count them!!!), 17 doctor/hospital visits and tests in 20 workdays!  I know, that seems a bit exaggerated.  NOPE.  Come check my calendar and you'll see for yourself.  Poor Mom has a birthday today (86 years young) and has been feeling so poorly that she hasn't even get out of her pj's.  That isn't fair.  So, when she is stronger, gets the knee brace off, and she can get around better, I'll take her and Dad to Louisiana to visit other elderly cousins to compare ailments and maybe a day trip to check out the slot machines.  Speaking of Dad......he just tags along to the dr. visits and because of his dementia says "Are we here for me?"  After some tests at the hospital where he received a plastic bracelet, he got in the car and said, "What is this for?  Where did this thing come from?"  Another funny comment he made to Mom when we were parking at the knee doctor's office:  "Well, if your knee was hurting this bad just to get out of the car you shouldn't have come with us!"  It always seems to be a circus around here.

REUNION NEWS

OUR reunion is just around the corner and we are having to come up with the money to pay venues and services!  Thanks to all that have made the effort to send in that check as early as they could.  Boy, I hope all those in the MAIL CALL today come through that say the "check is in the mail."   Now, the rest of you need to step up and help us out.  I am getting so excited!  The decorations are going to be outstanding....while not EXACTLY being in Hawaii....it will be close enough. Friday night at the Holiday Inn we'll have chips and finger foods and a CASH BAR.  For the Saturday shindig at the BRAD don't forget to bring cameras since we will have several areas to take cute pictures.  The food is going to be great so PLEASSSSEEEE don't fill up at the local CAJUN restaurants before you come.  We'll let you eat a big LUNCH but save some space for our food Saturday night. Even though it will be finger foods.....there will be plenty.  Besides that.....you are paying for it~~ It will be BYOB, set-ups and bottled water will be free. Now, look at the list of classmates coming to the reunion.  Be sure to contact some of your buddies that aren't on the list yet.  Hope to see you there.  By the way, I sent out the invitations to the 40 faculty members that I have addresses for.  It will exciting to hear from some that will join us. We have heard from some already when finding addresses.   I'll tell you more about them at a later time.

a note from Glenda Patin
We are also going through some tough times here.  My mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about three years ago and right now she's probably in the middle stage of it; on top of that three weeks ago we found out that she has Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and last week she had her first round of chemo.  Please add my mom, Ollie Patin, to the prayer list.

I'm doing fine and feeling good.  Just made a trip to Florida a couple of weeks ago.  It felt good to be traveling again.  I am having test on Monday and will meet with the doctor on Wednesday.  Will know more then.

a note from Walter Jones '67 concerning his wife, Linda Messer Jones '66
I'm writing this update from MD Anderson. We have had a good visit. Dr visit, physical, blood work, and CA 125 (was 7.6) all excellent. Infusion is underway now and is going well. We had a great trip to Walt Disney World in late May. Linda was on the go from 7 am to midnight for about a week with no problems. We had our grandniece with us. What a joy she was. We would love to hear from you. I've changed internet providers so I may be out of touch until Wednesday.  Thank you all for your continued prayer support.
PS- While at MD Anderson this time, I ran into an old work buddy named Frank. His wife has ovarian cancer. She is stage 4 and needs your prayers also.

a note from Pamela Owings Hund
Kenneth (my husband) got second degree burns on his face, right hand, ears, and the back of his head. We rushed him to the ER and they sent him to the burn unit in Galveston. Thank God his burns weren't any worse or there would be scarring. His face was so swollen and burnt so badly that I didn't recognize him when I got to Galveston. The tub and scrubbing he received when he got there was every bit as bad an ordeal as we had always heard it was. We have to scrub his face three times a day and that isn't fun either. I feel like God was watching out for us that day because it could have been so much worse. Seeing him on fire is a sight I will never forget.

a note of THANKS from Billy Jordan concerning his grandson
A blessing has been bestowed upon us as my grandson's platelet count today was 161,000 which is in normal range.  All of his bruises are gone and he looks terrific.  We know that the power of prayer coming from all of those that have included him in their prayers and thoughts made the difference.  To all my high school classmates that have done this, my heartfelt thanks go out to all of you.

Jim ended up back in the cath lab on May 12th – 2 more stents in his heart and STILL has a cigar in his mouth!!!  While he was in the cath lab I decided I need to refocus…so I’m going to retire.  He didn’t believe I was serious until I gave my notice on Friday.  I told them I’d work with them on a transition plan but no longer than the end of August.  It’s time for me to spend more time with Jim and the grandbabies

Well, I am sure that I am forgetting a couple of things that I need to include in this edition of the NEWSLETTER, but can't think straight.  I have been working on it for two days between getting the faculty invites out and taking care of a very sick parent.  So, I'll say "so long" for now.  Keep those letters, photos, memories, guest book entries, etc. coming.  Mike Lawson and I will keep up our end of the bargain as long as you do the same on your end!
