It has been a
month since I have written a NEWSLETTER. Why? Well, it is not because I
have been overly busy, out-of-town, or helping my parents daily. No, it
was because I haven't received any MAIL from classmates. Now, don't get me
wrong. I get political articles, cartoons, jokes, etc from many of you but
not what I need for the MAIL CALL section. Some items I receive I send over to
Mike and he puts them on the front page of the website. But, I think
I know of another reason I haven't been getting MAIL. I'll touch on that
subject later in this edition.

MAIL CALL
from Janette Light Norton in
Cypress
Life continues at warp speed:
Sharon Lewis, Cherlyn Hebert, and
I still meet for our monthly lunches in downtown
Houston. I
noticed that several of you in the area have recently retired. Anyone who
wants to join is welcome. Just let us know and we'll let you know when and
where. Cherlyn is about to cruise in Greece, Sharon updates us on the adventures of building
the "garage-mahal," and I've got my family news to bore everyone with. We
also have fun remembering when.
My son and daughter-in-law have moved to
Houston and are
living with us while he continues to heal from electrical burn injuries.
Of course, Richard and I are delighted they are with us. Unfortunately,
Richard and I downsized to a cottage never dreaming that anyone would be
"living" with us again. But, we're having a great time enjoying them as
adults, they and their two dogs and two cats.
Travis continues to heal well and Kristen will finish her teacher's
certification in October. Now my entire family lives in the Houston area--something
that we could never imagine just two years ago.
September 19, Liz Tieskens' mom
turned 100!! We celebrated with a precious reception featuring her two
favorite foods, "a cup of coffee and a piece of cake," then later we moved back
to Liz's for dinner. Beverly Copeland
and her husband, Ronnie
Gaspard ('67), surprised Liz with
their attendance. Beverly was Liz's very first friend, living
next door in Lakeview when both were born. Mrs. Tieskens had a most
interesting life, born when Taft was president, becoming the breadwinner at 16
for the seven children left at home when her parents died, and , of course,
marrying Harry, an admiral in the Royal Dutch Navy. Today Mimi, as she is
called, is unaware of the present but she still loves to sing her favorite hymns
and regularly announces to anyone who will listen that God has blessed her.
All of Liz's children, including Mimi's great granddaughter got to share the day
with her.
Recent deaths and illnesses remind us to keep first things first. Stay in
touch with those you love, get in touch with those you've missed. Only
today is promised.
from Lyn Frasier and
Perry Lee in
Sun City, TX
Perry and I moved to Sun City outside of
Georgetown last
July. It is sooooo nice here. There is so much to do. Quite a
difference from
SE Texas.
from Jan Russell in Spring
I'm still teaching - plan to keep at it for 6 more years, but I AM reading the
TEACHER RETIREMENT SYSTEM brochures more carefully these days! I teach
Texas History at Kleb Intermediate in the Klein ISD.

FACEBOOK (Damn you!)
Don't know if Facebook on the internet has anything to do with the lack of
classmate support on Mail Call, but it sure does seem funny that many of our
classmates can spend hours a week, you know who you are "-), but don't have 10
minutes to send in an update about what is going on in their lives for the
NEWSLETTER or web page. Call me crazy, but it sure is a coincidence, isn't
it? At this time, I have 47 classmate FRIENDS on my FACEBOOK page. I
enjoy reading about others and like to add my 2 cents, also. But, I am
saddened that Mike and I feel neglected. Of course, we want you to just do
both. Come on. You can do it. For those of you who don't know
what the heck I am talking about, good! That means you will have more time
to write to Mike and I.
P.S. Here is a hint to all you girl classmates and friends: Go to
settings, change your name to make sure you include your maiden name.
It helps others to find you on this program. Hope this hint helps you.

NEWS FROM THE HOMEFRONT
Murphy and I are going to take a 7 day vacation with a bus tour group to Taos, Albuquerque, and
Santa Fe, NM. We will be there for the Hot Air
Balloon festival. I'll write about it when we return. My mother is
having a fit thinking about "what will happen if a hurricane comes while you are
gone?" I guess one of you will have to step in and take care of them!!
Oh okay, maybe my brother in Friendswood will pick up the slack.
Hopefully, she is worried about nothing. She tends to do that a lot
anyway. Just her nature....always has been.

It is a bittersweet time for me today. The first message I got on my
e-mail was from Lyn Frasier Lee
telling me about Mr. Rowland's
passing early this morning. I am heartbroken by the news. But, I was
honored to reconnect with him the last 2 years after not seeing him for decades.
He also came to our 40th class reunion for the Saturday night gathering.
Many of the classmates didn't realize he was there because they didn't hear it
announced on the speaker. I will miss my teacher, mentor, and friend.
I know heaven is happy to have him as their newest angel. God bless you,
Mr. Rowland. My prayers are with you and your family.
Here are a few "I Remember When's" I wrote about Mr.
Rowland. IRW on 2/3/07 -
