TJ Class of '68     NEWSLETTER                                                           04/24/10

Easter has come and gone, high school baseball and softball are determining playoffs, NFL draft has been fun to watch, ASTROS are actually starting to win here and there, spring soccer is going on, and graduations are around the corner.  Everything seems to be in high gear.  Well, everything except MAIL CALL!!!

MAIL CALL

from Cherlyn Hebert in Houston
I just got back from my Caribbean cruise.  We got fogged out of Galveston Easter Sunday, so instead of being home about 9 am, I didn't get home until 5:30 that night, so it ruined my Easter plans.  But, that was better than being the poor people waiting to board that day.  Word was that they wouldn't sail until the next morning.

Karen Giles Hopper (Linda Hopper's sis-in-law) and I had lunch last week.  It's still such fun to catch up on everything.  We plan to do it every other month so that we don't lose touch again.  I also headed into Nederland recently for some family visits.  My brother, sister and I  had dinner in PA and then went over to the casino in Lake Charles.  I was amazed when I was in the PA area to see how many more hotels have been built in the Central Mall area.  I guess that bodes well for economic growth in our hometown.

from Judy Thompson Orr in Fremont, CA
I saw that Paula Iles Restrepo '69 was looking for Jan Campbell Mucha '69.  Jan and I grew up together, our parents were close friends, and we still keep in touch.  She lives in Dallas with her husband, David.  I love reading the updates on our class website and keeping in touch.  Thanks to you and Mike for continuing this endeavor.

from Hal Ross on the road AGAIN
("stolen off of FACEBOOK")

A log of his bicycle ride from Houston to Austin (aka... MS150)

  • "I can't believe it.  All this preparation for the MS 150 and when it comes down to show time, I can't decide what to wear or how to pack!
  • 5:46 am   All dressed up waiting.  Come on 6:45
  • 6:16 am  Tailwind
  • 8:26 am  Mile 25.  First stop
  • 4:41 pm  Had a crash at mile 36.  A rider went down in front.  Put me in the ditch.
  • 4:44 pm Finished the ride for the day.  100.87 miles
  • 4:47 am  Headwinds this morning for the last 75 miles
  • 12:48 pm  17.3 miles to go.  Feeling good today!
  • Miraculously, after running over a bike, getting hit by the bike behind me, going off the road and down the embankment, stopping in the bottom of a ditch, still clipped in and on the saddle, my bike and I were still completely intact and uninjured.  How often does that happen?

FACEBOOK has a link that allows readers to send in memories of our "crusin' days.  That gave me an idea for my NEWSLETTER.  Write me your memories of these days long ago.  I'll print them in this section of the NEWSLETTER.  Also, if you have any other ideas to pep up our updates, Mike and I would appreciate it.  Sometimes we get a little discouraged at the input.  But, we will keep on truckin.  Let me hear from you.

SUPPORT

(a note received from David Williams)
My genetics and life style intersect next Tuesday, April 13th.  I am having triple by-pass surgery in the Heart Hospital of Austin.  I have an excellent doctor and I am not concerned.
(Well, David tolerated the surgery very well and was on the phone the next day talking with his staff at his office!)dwilliams1878@austin.rr.com

(a note from Laura Meece Darby concerning Bart's parents)
Both of Bart's parents are not doing wll.  His mom has ovarian cancer.  She has gone through the 1st set of three rounds of chemo, which did not work.  She has had the first of three rounds  of different type of chemo.  MD Anderson is continuing to monitor the situation.  His dad had prostate trouble about a year ago and everything is okay.  But, now he has neuropathy in his legs and signs of dementia.  He has fallen numerous times and is currently in rehab at the hospital in PA.  He will probably be in rehab for about three weeks.

Update information needed:

  • Horace (Tinker) and Jody Juneau Brown's grandson (leukemia)
  • Kay Campbell Netherland (surgery)
